Water Sports Near Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
Fort Lauderdale has more miles of waterway than Venice. Between the Atlantic, the Intracoastal, and the New River, there's no shortage of ways to get on the water.
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving
The reef at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is one of Florida's most accessible. You can snorkel it straight from the beach — no boat, no charter. For scuba, several dive shops on El Mar Drive run daily reef trips. The wreck of the Mercedes I sits in about 97 feet of water a few miles offshore and is one of the most popular dives in Broward County.
Jet Skiing
Jet ski rentals are available along the Intracoastal and at several marinas near Fort Lauderdale Beach. Most operators offer hourly rentals and will give you a quick orientation before you head out. The Intracoastal is the safer option for first-timers; the ocean is better for those who want more open water.
Parasailing
Several operators launch from Fort Lauderdale Beach and Pompano Beach. You go up in tandem, so it's easy for first-timers. On a clear day you can see the reef below and the skyline behind you.
Deep Sea Fishing
Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale have active charter fleets. Half-day trips target mahi-mahi, kingfish, and wahoo. Full-day offshore trips go after sailfish and tuna. Most charters include gear and bait — just bring sunscreen and a cooler.
Kayaking & Paddleboarding
The Intracoastal Waterway is flat and sheltered, making it ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding. Rental shops near the beach offer hourly and half-day rates. Paddle north toward Pompano or south toward Fort Lauderdale and watch the mega-yachts go by.
Boat Rentals
Rent a pontoon or a center console and explore the waterways on your own. Several marinas near Lauderdale-by-the-Sea offer half-day and full-day rentals. No captain's license required for most vessels under 26 feet in Florida.
Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi
Not exactly a sport, but a great way to get around. The Water Taxi runs along the Intracoastal and New River, stopping at restaurants, hotels, and attractions. Day passes are available and it's a fun way to see the city from the water.
